Cyrus pulled a chair over from a neighboring table and quietly munched one of his cookies while Kyna wrapped up her business. As he chewed, he gave Georges the once-over.
The man was a sharp dresser: pleated silk slacks, a handwoven silk blazer and a conservative blue-and-red club tie. Georges was polite enough and smiled a lotand he made Cyrus feel like a slob. Before Cyrus knew it, Kyna and Georges stood and shook hands. Cyrus stood too, nodding and smiling and eyeing the diamond earring in Georges's left ear.
I should have studied gems instead of guns.
After Georges had disappeared up the escalator, Kyna and Cyrus reclaimed their seats. Kyna picked up her coffee cup and Cyrus offered her the last cookie.
"Thanks." She broke off half of the cookie and popped it into her mouth.
They finished their drinks and strolled around the mall for a few minutes, stopping at the bookstore and wandering through a huge department store.
"I have to meet someone here tomorrow evening," Kyna said on the way to the car.
"Georges?" It popped out before Cyrus could stop himself.
Kyna kept walking, but peered closely at his face. "You're not jealous, are you?"
"Don't be ridiculous," Cyrus sputtered. "I was just concerned. The guy looks shifty to me. He could be hiding anything in that ponytail of his."
Kyna stopped walking and started laughing. "Georges is gay."
"Oh. Right. I knew that."
"How?"
"A good bodyguard picks up on things."
"Personal security specialist."
"Yeah, right."
Her teasing tone made him squirm until she relented and started walking again. "Since we're going to have to hang around town another day, I wondered if you wanted to do something tomorrow morning?"
